Doctrine & Covenants 89: 18-19

"And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures."

Shunning the Family Bed?

By Ember

I have a handful of children and all of them have spent the first few months, at least, of their lives sleeping next to me. It is one of my favorite, most enjoyable, experiences with a new baby. I've found that they adopt a correct day/night schedule very quickly and I am more rested as a result.

I received an email today from Dr. Mercola and wanted to pass it on. The statistics related to death risk are reviewed as well as other crucial issues on the subject. Click HERE to read it.

What do you think? Were babies meant to sleep alone?

  1. I LOVE co-sleeping. I loved this article about the benefits of it too. I have shared my bed with all 6 of my kids. I get better rest especially with a newborn. I find I can't sleep listening to the noises a newborn makes when they aren't laying right next to me. And nursing is very easy!

  2. All I know is my kids and I all slept better when we were in our own rooms in our very own beds. I didn't nurse and my kids never faced life-threatening infections or any of that weird dumb stuff and are the smartest kids in their classes at school (according to their teachers, not me). I think what it comes down to is what the mommy and daddy are comfortable with. People can do testing and prove both sides, depending on which side they're doing the testing for. It's all up to the parents. If you pray every night and have faith that God's hand is in all things, then all will be as it should be. If the baby dies of SIDS, it's my opinion that they were meant to leave the earth at that time, that it was part of a bigger plan, NOT because they were or weren't sleeping next to someone else. It's all about comfort zones and what YOU think is best for you and your baby. Testing-shmesting, that's what I say. ;)

  3. I can say this, I have a child that only nursed for a brief time and never slept in my bed. Then I have other children who nursed and slept in my bed constantly. The kid who didn't lacks self confidence, needs reassurance, craves attention, and requires me to work ten times harder to have a good relationship. Who knows maybe thats just the way she was going to be anyways. I don't know. All I can say is that the others don't have any of those issues. People look down on those of us who do want to hold the baby while they sleep, or sleep with them or nurse them for a full year or more. Well it wasn't till mothers started seeking this independence and need to work did they stop doing all of these things. We are all just getting back to what was for tons of years and that is the weird thing! Umm...this really bothers me. People have a hard time crate training a dog. Why, because it whines and fusses? But through a crying baby in a crib and let them cry it out. Am I the only one who sees a problem with that? Is it a bad thing that a child wants it's mother? Some seem to forget that we asked for this roll. As far as my kids being smart well that's not even a question. They are! And for those who say that there is a high death rate for kids who sleep with parents. Well most are attributed to alcohol or other drugs.
